Kromski Sonata Encore Spinning Wheel - Clear Finish

One of Kromski's most popular portable wheels has been updated to now include a magnetic flyer head. Beautiful and compact, it combines the classic architecture of the other Kromski wheels with the functional needs of a wheel that folds. You get both. It is a full-size spinning wheel that packs away as a small package, making it perfect for traveling, guild and festival gatherings or simply storage when not in use.

Daniel Kromski had been contemplating a folding wheel for several years and began in 2006 to put turning knife to wood. The final result is a fusion of the needs of a modern folding wheel and the traditional look of Kromski wheels.

The Sonata is a folding wheel, but much more. Your Sonata also ships with a padded carry bag that the Kromskis have made in Poland. It is padded on all sides with extra heavy padding on base to support the folded wheel. Large outside pocket for spinning supplies with additional pockets inside.

Kromski Sonata

"I love my new Kromski Sonata spinning wheel! Thank you for fast shipping. I needed a complete wheel to travel with and this wheel is perfect."

Solid first wheel. I love

"Solid first wheel. I love that it came with the carrying case and it folds up really nicely. I was debating on different wheels but what sold me is the height of the orifice. Helps with the back."

This has been the best

"This has been the best buy i ever bought for spinning. I debated a wheel for ages as i enjoyed drop spindle spinning but wanted to produce yarn faster. The look of the sonata drew me in And ranked it at the top of my selection list. I wanted “old time feel” with my first wheel. This wheel fit the box and folds ups super fast to travel with when i get the urge or if i need it out of the way for a while. It treadles really easily and can be treadled fast or slow depending on whats comfortable to me for the day. I just adjust my whorl as needed and off i go. I did buy the magnetic flyer and use that constantly. But the flyer it comes with is great as well and its not necessary to buy the magnetic one. Though it does make taking your bobbin off and on much faster. And it can be used in double drive with this head if thats wanted. With the whorls it comes with you can spin a variety of yarns before needing to get extra whorls. The bobbins hold a pretty decent amount. Ive gotten up to about 4oz on single spun worsted yarn on mine. I dont think you can go wrong with this if you have small space to put it or travel a lot. Its handled everything ive thrown at it with ease! This came with a clear finish which is a poly finish (i asked kromski) if i did it again i might go with an unfinished to finish as i prefer but i was to excited to take the time to do it."

Good little wheel

"I bought the Sonata and added on the magnetic flyer and an extra fast whorl. I love this wheel. It doesn't take up a ton of floor space, there are lots of optional whorls and bobbins and flyers to choose from, so it'll spin almost anything. I've spun chunky woolen yarn and fine cotton singles and a bit of everything in between. I love that the treadles are set a bit apart, so it's comfortable for a fat woman like me to treadle for hours. I like how easy it is to fold away and set up again. It's reasonably quiet and easy to adjust. It's also worth noting that the treadles sit up off the floor a bit. I like this, because I have short legs, but long-legged folk may want to try one on for size and see if the extra inch matters. The hemp brake band it comes with is . . . not wonderful. I quickly replaced it with a piece of carpet warp, which has been much less noisy. Almost everything about this wheel is mechanically simple, which makes it easy to maintain, easy to adjust, and, I suspect, easy to repair should the need arise. The stock mother-of-all is a little odd, because it's quite high and so far away that I end up having to tip the wheel toward me or half stand up to check on how the yarn is building up. The hooks on the flyer are too far apart for very fine yarn - it tends to build up in mounds and then eventually slide over into the valleys when it gets too high, which can make finding broken ends really tricky. Both of these issues are alleviated by the magnetic flyer. I'll write a separate review of that, but the sliding hooks solve the mountain-and-valley problem, and it points toward you, so it's much easier to see. The setup instructions are not great. If you've never really studied how a wheel is set up, I can see how these would be confusing. I ended up with left-over parts and it took me ages to figure out what they were for. I eventually got there for everything except one extra eye screw, which someone on Ravelry eventually mentioned was to give you somewhere to hang your hook. Aha! And finally, I have to report that some of the assembly seemed very hurried. I have a badly-installed treadle hinge, for example, that wants to creak like a barn door unless I keep it well-oiled (the wax recommended by the company is insufficient). There are a few other places where there were things that were not quite right that I was able to fix properly, but I can't give full marks when I have to come along behind and tweak it. None of it was major enough to be worth returning the wheel, and once I got them addressed, it's been smooth sailing."

Folding Sonata wheel for traveling

"I took a good while to get enuf oil into all the connections to make the wheel run smoothly and then lots of wax plus oil to get an awful squeal out of the treadles. Running smoothly now and it folds and unfolds quickly to store or use as needed. Nice carrying case. It can share bobbins with my favorite Fantasia wheel."
