Downtown Frankfort is Thriving (as taken from the Downtown Frankfort Inc. Website)
As a community of independent souls, we are working together beautifully to revitalize our downtown and there is a pioneering spirit and feeling of opportunity in the air again. The Grand Theatre opened its doors in 2009 as our new 400-seat performing arts center. Other historic buildings are being redeveloped for mixed uses including residential apartments, condominiums and retail space. In 2010 the World Equestrian Games, never before held outside of Europe, are coming to nearby Lexington and we are expecting over 700,000 international visitors to our area.
The Kentucky River figures prominently in this rebirth, too. Downtown Frankfort Inc. is partnering with state, city, and county governments, public institutions and private enterprises to create a Riverfront Development plan spanning five miles. Additionally, the Corp of Engineers is repairing the lock and dam system that bookends our town, reestablishing the flow of water through our region. So, once again, this magnificent natural resource represents our forward movement into a healthy, prosperous future.
We’re proud of our history and also excited about where we are headed as a vital and thriving community. So, come to downtown Frankfort soon, and visit the heart of Kentucky’s capital.
