Sheep Crossing

With equal parts of facts and fun, Sheep Crossing explores the world of sheep and wool, celebrating real people--especially children--working with sheep. It is a story told with images and music with just enough words to give background and structure. It follows children and adults working with young lambs and preparing for competition at fairs. It joins a contest where teams of children complete a "Sheep to Shawl" in just four hours, introduces border collies and their trainers and visits spinneries in Vermont and New Hampshire. 30 minutes.

To complement the video the authors are making a lesson plan available.

Spinning
The Kromski Prelude

The newest spinning wheel from the Kromskis of Poland. The Prelude is just the wheel for beginners or perhaps a second Kromski wheel for others. It has the look of an antique wheel and the high degree of wood turning that the Kromskis are famous for, but it also has all the touches modern spinners expect.

The Kromski Prelude is a single drive wheel; a first for the Kromskis. The good news is that it uses the same bobbins as all the other Kromski wheels. This means that, as you consider adding a second or third Kromski wheel, you know your bobbins will work with all the different models!

The Prelude is easy to treadle, easy to transport, and has an 18" diameter wheel (same as the Kromski Minstrel) for excellent ratios. If you like, you can swivel the mother-of-all in line with the bench for a more compact "package" when moving the wheel or for storage.

The Prelude is made of European alder and birch. No Kromski wheel has any plastic parts and as such makes the perfect wheel for reenactors. Additional specifications:

Ashford Kiwi

A double treadle wheel from Ashford that was introduced for Fall-Winter 1997. It makes an excellent beginner wheel due to its double treadle style and affordable price.

Features include: Double Treadle design allows for easy stopping/starting and changing wheel direction while leaving hands free. Treadles are hinged to allow heel-toe action. Simple scotch tension system and polycord, stretchy drive band. Rear wheel mounting allows for easy band changing.

The Kiwi wheel has two ratios: 5.5:1 and 8:1. Flyer orifice is 10 mm (a little over 3/8 inch). Large solid drive wheel that is 17.5 inches in diameter allows for good momentum and smooth, unhurried treadling. Easy assembly, takes just a few minutes with an allen wrench (supplied). Centrally located flyer allows for use by either right-handed or left-handed spinners. Sturdy construction. Lightweight and easy to carry. The wheel itself is made of MDF, a high density engineered wood product that has proven to be very durable and warp resistant; it stains very well. Drop Spindles

How about trying to spin with a drop spindle? These are inexpensive and durable. Suitable for kids and adults.

From the maker of The Babe spinning wheel, yet another entree into spinning with a low priced top whorl drop spindle. Made of wood and plastic, it is the essence of what drop spindles should be - simple and straightforward. 14" long with two 4" whorls. Weight is approximately 2.5 oz using the 2 whorls.
