FELTING is an age-old craft. Perhaps developed in the Middle East, perhaps the Far East, it is a process that has evolved with local traditions wherever it was used. And it is still used today, by kids in kindergarten to nomads on the great plains of Asia living in felt yurts.
The technique is basic, requires very little experience or tools, and "mistakes" may well lead to interesting results. The Woolery brings you products and information about feltmaking and needle felting. Have fun!
WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE FELT:
• carded wool (preferably fine or medium-fine wool) or raw fleece and handcards or drumcarder
• washboard (included in some kits) unless you are making small projects
• book (such as "The Art of Feltmaking" and/or video/DVD (“Feltmaking by Hand”)
• soap and water
(Nice to have: felting needles to felt without soap or water - however these are extremely sharp and should not be used by children).
WHAT YOU NEED TO NEEDLE FELT:
• small amounts of various colors of carded wool (preferably fine or medium-fine wool)
• felting needles (these are extremely sharp and should not be used by children) and felting needle holder
• felting surface such as a sponge or piece of foam (included in some kits)
• book (such as "Needle Felting" and "Needle Felting by Hand or Machine", and/or video ("Introduction to Needle Felting")
(Nice to have: Fiber Blenders, Needle Felting Machine, Kits).
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FELTING, FULLING AND NEEDLEFELTING?
FELTING or FELTMAKING means that you are working from the fiber (most often sheep's wool) to make a felted fabric or product using soap and water; there is no knitting, crocheting or weaving involved.
FULLING or KNITFELTING is achieved by knitting a garment and then shrinking it, filling (hence the term "fulling") the holes between the stitches. This fulling can be done on crocheted or woven items as well. Check our knitting books for many projects that are knitted and then "felted".
NEEDLEFELTING, unlike felting, does not require soap and water; it is accomplished by using felting needles to make figurines or apply additional fibers to decorate fabric or garments (those can be made of felted material or knitted, crocheted or woven material).

ROLLING FELTMAKING MACHINE
This maintenance free motorized machine takes the physical labor out of making felt! It will roll a piece 28" wide (+-) on a roll that is about 12" in diameter. This mat is ideal for using with the felting needle tool by Clover pictured above. For appliqué, just place the motif over the base fabric and pierce lightly with the felting needle tool. Insert the needles vertically; they should not touch the base of the mat. The fibers will become interlaced, attaching the motif to the fabric beautifully. The bristle length provides the ideal hardness and density for punching. Overall base is 6.25"x4.5"; needle felting surface is 5.2"x3.25". Total height is 2.75".
