Working with fibers and dyes is a lot of fun. You can follow a lot of rules or you can experiment and see what the results turn out to be. Either way, you end up with something that is more personal that you will treasure.

Natural Dyes

NATURAL DYE EXTRACT KIT: includes the following extracts: 12g. of cochineal, 38g. cutch, 35g. grey logwood, 39g. madder, 2 oz. osage orange; plus 1 pair of gloves, mask, 1 lb. of alum, 1/3 lb. alum acetate, 4 oz. scouring agent, 58g. soda ash, 28g. iron and a 21-page booklet. Kit will dye approximately 19 lbs. of fiber to medium shades.

MADDER ROOT (WHOLE): orange and red; 4 to 8 ozs. per lb. of wool.

ANNATTO SEEDS: orange-browns to golden yellows in an alkaline dyebath.

BRAZILWOOD CHIPS: rich reds and pinks including burgundies and purplish magentas. 2 oz. per lb.

MYROBALAN EXTRACT: tans to oranges, almost black if used with iron. High tannin content. 2-3 ozs. per lb.

SYNTHETIC DYES

Washfast Acid Wool dyes: 1 oz. will dye 4-8 lbs. Use with white vinegar.

Available colors

Yellow, Forest and Leaf Greens, Bright and National Blues, Turquoise, Navy, Lilac, Plum, Bright Violet, Bright Red, Bright Orange, Magenta, Brick, Brown, Caramel, Chocolate Brown, and Black. See color card below to view colors. Free instructions on request. Good companion books for these dyes are "Hands on Dyeing" and "The Ashford Book of Dyeing".

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACID DYES

Color card for Acid dyes: shows samples of yarns dyed with the various colors and includes 2 samples per color depending on the percentage of dye used. Very useful to have an idea of which dye to use.

PROCION MX REACTIVE DYES: work best on cellulosic fibers (cotton, rayon, linen, ramie, jute): lightfast, wash-fast, boil-fast. Require washing soda and common salt. Colors: Yellow, Fuschia, Red, Blue, Turquoise, Rusty Brown, Black and Forest Green. 1 tbsp. per lb. of fiber. Good companion books for these dyes are "Surface Design with Procion Dyes" and "Color by Accident".

Mordants

See this notice about safe handling of dyes.

ALUM MORDANT (Potassium aluminum sulphate): use 3 to 4 ozs. per lb. of wool or silk; safe to use.

D-1000 - $7.50/lb.

 
TIN MORDANT (Stannous chloride): brightens colors; handle with care. 1/4 oz. per lb.
EAR-1001 - $10.90 for 2 oz.
 

COPPER MORDANT (Cupric sulphate pentahydrate): gives greenish tint; handle with care; l/2 oz. per lb.

EAR-1002 - $3 for 4 oz.

 

IRON MORDANT (Ferrous sulphate heptahydrate): darkens colors; handle with care. 1/2 oz. per lb.

EAR-1003 - $3 for 4 oz.

 

TARTARIC ACID: use w/mordants to help prevent streaks; 1 oz. per lb.

ALL-1004 - $4 for 4 oz.

 

SPECTRALITE (Thio-urea dioxide): substitute for hydrosulfite in indigo vatting; use about 1/6 the amount or 1/3 oz. per lb. of fiber.

EAR-1005 - $3.75 for 2 oz.

 

WASHING SODA (Sodium carbonate): use with Procion dyes and with indigo and spectralite; approx. 3 oz. per lb. of yarn or follow dye recipe.

GLAUBER'S SALTS (Sodium sulfate): use with acid wool dyes to prevent streaks; 1 tsp. per oz. of yarn.
