Surface Design with Procion Dyes
Created by: Earth Guild
Procion dyes present exciting possibilities to designers, colorists, printers and to all the chronically fiber-crazed. They are fully concentrated, industrial-strength dyes, safe and easy to use for home- and studio-dyeing. They are light-fast, boil-fast, permanent, fiber-reactive dyes. The only accessory chemicals are inexpensive and without menace: table salt and washing soda (and with certain applications: baking soda, urea, keltex). Procion dyes develop in cold water, so that they may be used with wax-resist dyeing methods.
Cotton, viscose, rayon, linen, jute, ramie, hemp and other cellulosic fibers take Procion dyes most easily. Wool, silk, and nylon can generally be coaxed into accepting color from Procion dyes. Most synthetic fibers (polyesters, acrylics, acetates) will not accept Procion dyes. Dye a test swatch if fiber content or finish is unknown.
We have not exhausted Procion possibilities here. The aim is to get you started.
