Fibre Facts

Author: Bette Hochberg

This is a basic guide for handweavers. It tells how fibres behave, how they are formed into yarns, how to use them in weaving, and how to care for them.

Many weavers do not know enough about wool, cotton, silk, linen and other fibres. They do not know what behavior to expect from the fibres and yarns they use. Thus, they cannot confidently plan a proiect and predict the results.

Here are the facts which will give you a clear understanding of natural and synthetic fibres, their properties, and how they affect the quality and performance of weaving. There are detailed charts of exact strength, weight, elasticity, recommended temperatures, etc. for each fibre. It contains only information which will be truly useful to the average handweaver. It will be helpful not only to weavers, but also to spinners, knitters and others who work with fibres. This book is not meant to be read from cover to cover. It is intended as a working reference.

This is the flrst time that much of this material has been presented in a book for handweavers. Much of the technical data has appeared in texts on industrial weaving. In order to make it clearly understood by weavers with non-scientific backgrounds, the author uses everyday language rather than technical terminology whenever possible.
