This is the smoothest book charkha available. High quality internal parts combined with a furniture grade exterior box frame make this the premier book charkha available today.
Charkhas are the perfect wheel to use for spinning fibers with short staple lengths such as cotton, silk, angora or any fine fiber.
Extremely portable as everything folds up into a case that has the contours of a hardback book.
Imported from India, this is the authentic "Gandhi" Charkha Wheel. You might recall Ben Kingsley in the movie spinning on one of these. Hand-crafted in teak by an Indian firm for domestic users (yes, they are still used today), the most popular size is the book Charkha.
This deluxe model provides the familiar smooth "feel" of spinning on a traditional spinning wheel.
Note: this product is a true charkha wheel handmade in India. As such, each wheel will have slight cosmetic differences. We hope you enjoy your charkha, a very efficient tool and a sure conversation piece!

"I adore this Charkha! The first cotton singles took about two minutes to get going and now the spindles are adding up. With a few minutes of Joan Ruane’s video on using the Charkha set up a drafting fiber went beautifully. I look forward to using it daily and couldn’t be happier!"
"Wonderful little wheel, I've never been able to spin cotton, but this makes it fun. Smooth operation, with a little oil. Got a dycem place mat to keep it from sliding, the mat that came with was insufficient. Happy with the purchase, but wish it came in a darker wood."
"Charkhas aren’t super complicated machines, but they do take a bit of getting used to. Most of the charkhas available to buy need a bunch of sanding and setup to work well (let alone learn on). This charkha needs NO tuning. It’s ready for the bands to be attached and spin right away. It’s dreamy smooth. I had a little hiccup with my order… but I was wowed with how quickly Woolery staff offered a better solution than what I asked for. Thankful that Woolery carries these!!!"
"This charka is worth every penny! Smooth glorious cotton spinning immediately after I unpacked it. The wood glows beautifully. I'm so happy! Thanks Woolery!"
"This was given as a Christmas gift to my daughter-in-law who is an excellent and avid spinner. She loved it!"
"Shipping was super fast. This was in direct contrast to my previous order, so I was very happy with that. The Charkha is awesome. Glad I spent the extra to get the Deluxe. It's beautiful and after just a few attempts, I was happily spinning cotton. I also ordered an extra spindle. Will likely order more of those. The Charkha doesn't come with instructions, but a quick online search provides videos. Once you've done it once, it's really simple. I like that it's small and discreet. I keep it on my bookshelf and no one knows it's there unless I show them. Look up the history and you'll understand why that was so important. ;) I will be using this little gem for years to come, and will unquestionably be ordering from the Woolery again."
"Glad I ordered the Deluxe - there is rough grain visible on the both of the wheels (a bit disappointing), and the lid closure clasp is a bit flimsy (not quite lining up for a smooth snap shut), but overall it is quite nice. No trouble setting it up and using it, and other than practice, I think I'm all set for some enjoyable spinning. I echo what others have said about the need for a leaflet to aid in set-up, but after viewing a couple of videos there was little mystery, and as I was going to do that anyway, no problem. I love service from the Woolery."
"My charkha arrived today, and I'm surprised you didn't hear my chin hit the floor when it (my chin) dropped. This isn't just a spinning wheel. It's a piece of art. I was amazed at the quality of workmanship. Everything has a place and can be secured in its place. All the surfaces are beautifully finished. The wheel mechanisms operate smoothly and easily, and I turned out my first several feet of fine cotton thread in just a few minutes of playing around to get the hang of the operation (I have experience with using a tahkli which helped). I'm very glad I opted for the ""deluxe"" model, and b elieve me, this device is going to see a lot of use."
"I received my well-packed and nicely made Charkha Book earlier than expected. The service and response was great when I asked questions over which one I should get. I chatted with someone on the Internet and on the phone. I've never used one before or seen another one in person, but I'm happy with this one. Like everything else in the hobby/craft world, it takes lots of practice to do well."
