  The Mummies of Ürümchi

Author: Elizabeth Wayland Barber

In the museums of Ürümchi in Uyghur Autonomous Region is a collection of mummies dating back as far as 4,000 years. What is odd is that they are not Asian but Caucasoid - tall, large-nosed, and blond wth thick beards and round eyes.

What were these blond Caucasians doing in the heart of Asia? Few clues are offered by their pottery or tools, but their clothes - woolen that rarely lasts more than a few centuries - have been preserved as brightly hued as the day they are worven. This is a facinating unveiling of an ancient, exotic, nearly forgotten world.
