Ponchos and Wraps

A poncho or other wrap is a most forgiving layer. It is ready to be thick and warm or light and airy; to look glamorous or casual, elegant or irreverent; to envelope or skim. What else can be worn front to back, even front (or back) to side? What else allows such a range of expression - from decisive fling to dreamy whirl? It has few issues - no sleeves to squeeze other sleeves into, no hemline to place advantageously (or at least not un-advantageously)--and when you are knitting one, very few AT SAME TIME's.
When we first think about knitting a wrap, we relax into an expansive, idea-generating mode. The shape is simple, fit is rarely an issue, gauge is not critical. The canvas is large and does not confine. The knitting is irresistible. It's comfort knitting.
So, although this book began as a collection of 12 designs from past issues of Knitter's Magazine, we were soon up to our needles in yarns and inspiration. Planning and knitting answers to 'What if... ?' While most appear here as Make it Yours! additions to other designs, a few are new, and more wait to be knit.
