"Oh, please, Grandfather! Read us a story!" The children all spoke at once and clamored around the big chair in which the old man with the whiskers and smiling eyes sat. "Just one more story, Grandfather, then we will go to bed." Their mother looked up from her spinning wheel and smiled. Mother knew the old man could not resist their pleas.
Grandfather loved the stories almost as much as the tour children. They settled on the rug in front of his chair, and the oldest girl poked the fire to keep it blazing. Regina, the smallest one, ran to the bookcase and plucked her favorite book from the shelf.
The tales were meant to be read aloud, and the children loved to hear Grandfather's voice as he read. He was able to make all the voices in the stories sound so real. They could make believe the people in the stories were right in the room with them.
