  Navajo and Hopi Dyes

Compiled by: Bill Rieske

It is especially satisfying to publish this combined book of Navajo and Hopi Dyes. Since 1973 I have devoted my time to researching and publishing educational material on Indian history and Indian studies. In 1974 I was able to buy the Navajo Dye Source shown on the cover of this book. The artist-designer is unknown. The poster from this dye source is a popular item. The 27 specimens shown were the largest variety I had seen, up to that time. Our latest purchase has 60 specimens. The Navajo Native Dye Appendix, following the Navajo section, shows the number of specimens displayed on the two sources. These native dyes continue to hold worldwide interest. The contrast of Navajo and Hopi uses continues to be seen in this combined book. Both booklets were origi- nally published to preserve the traditional methods and recipes for the tribal members.
